“Make new friends, but keep the old. One is silver and the other Black & Gold”. That is a line my dear friend Kristen Delmonico Miller coined on a recent college reunion/40th birthday trip to Miami. Over 50 women from the Vanderbilt University (hence black and gold) Class of 1997 left children, husbands, jobs and responsibilities to see friends that they had not seen for years for what was an unforgettable weekend.
My friend Paige Nolan put into beautiful words what we all were thinking and feeling in her blog here:
All of us stayed at the beautiful James Hotel in South Beach overlooking the spectacular Atlantic Ocean. A group of 50 women definitely draws some attention and many guests were amazed that we were able to get such a group together. I think we all were amazed.
My most memorable meal was at the famed Nobu. It was by far the best sushi I have ever eaten. I would highly suggest that you venture there at least once in your life. A little secret – I went twice. It was so good the first night, that I went two days later when my husband came down and ordered the exact same thing – Yellowtail Sashimi with Jalapeno and the Black Cod!
We also ventured to some more local fair and had some delicious Cuban food at Puerto Sagua. The black beans and rice with roasted chicken was out of this world. You definitely need to go off the beaten path in Miami for some good Cuban food.
What a wonderful trip – perfect for celebrating 40, life and getting out of the cold!
